STQARRIJA TAL-WIRT INTANĠIBBLI TAL-UNESCO
UNESCO INTANGIBLE HERITAGE STATUS

Il-festa Maltija issa hija rikonoxxuta uffiċjalment mill-UNESCO bħala Wirt Kulturali Intanġibbli tal-Umanità . Il-festa hija avveniment komunitarju ta' oriġini reliġjuża li jsir kull sena fil-parroċċi madwar Malta u Għawdex. F’Malta, l-istaġun prinċipali tal-festa jibda lejn l-aħħar ta’ April u jibqa’ għaddej sal-bidu ta’ Ottubru, b’diversi avvenimenti jseħħu fi rħula differenti. Il-voluntiera tal-komunità jippreparaw għall-festa matul is-sena u l-avveniment innifsu tipikament idum ġimgħa. Fl-aħħar jum, tinġarr statwa f’purċissjoni mmexxija mill-kleru u akkumpanjata minn membri tal-parroċċa u l-baned. Il-ġimgħa tal-festa tinvolvi kunċerti, marċi tal-banda, logħob tan-nar u daqq tal-qniepen. L-ikel tipiku tal-festa, bħall-qubbajt, jinbiegħ minn postijiet fit-toroq.

The Maltese festa has been officially recognised by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The festa is a community event of religious origin held annually in village parishes across Malta and Gozo. The main festa season in Malta starts towards the end of April and runs until the beginning of October, with multiple events taking place in different villages. Community volunteers prepare for the festa throughout the year and the event itself typically lasts a week. On the final day, a statue is carried in a procession led by the clergy and accompanied by members of the parish and marching bands. Festa weeks feature concerts, band marches, firework displays and bell ringing. Typical festa food, such as nougat, is sold from street stalls.

The square will come to life as children and families interact with traditional displays such as liedna work (the traditional Maltese decoration used in village feasts traditionally made from used paper, or from low-density polyethylene) festuni work (street decoration lights), and the shading of banners and pavilions. There will also be areas where children can hoist banners or pavilions. Additionally, visitors can join a workshop on the marbling crafts used in the scaffolding that decorates the squares and streets of our villages, and even learn how traditional nougat is made!
